One of the most ired monuments of the capital of Brazil, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Brasília celebrated its 45th anniversary on Sunday (May 31). Designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer, the building has 16 curved columns, assembled together to resemble hands moving upward as if in supplication, and is home to a collection of works by well-established artists.
Located on the Ministries Esplanade, the central area of Brazil's capital, the building is famous worldwide, and stands out from other surrounding buildings with its distinctive features. Antônio Carlos Carpintero, Architecture professor at the University of Brasília (UnB), says the Catholic shrine is impressive in every respect.

The Catheral's ususual shape makes it a key landmark of the city
“It has an unusual shape, to say the least, considering church architecture worldwide. And it's located at the Ministries Esplanade, the heart of political decisions, but in a separate square, because Lúcio Costa [the urban planner who designed Brasília] wanted to show that the Church is not part of the State,” he said.
The Cathedral was built in two years and completed in 1960, but was not opened until 1970. Its lines and unique features make it a key landmark of the city. At the entrance, a black tunnel leads to the main area, where daylighting and the reflection of the stained glass windows designed by French artist Marianne Peretti create the dominant tones. The blue, green, and brown colors in the glass that covers the Cathedral are enhanced by white pillars and the marble flooring.
From the ceiling hang three angels – Gabriel, Raphael and Michael – sculpted by Alfredo Ceschiatti. The largest of them weighs as much as 300 kilos. “The hanging angels give the Cathedral a feeling of immensity and lightness. [This] enhances perception of space and greatly improves the inner appearance,” Carpintero said. Outside stand sculptures of the four Evangelists.
According to the parish priest, Father George Albuquerque, the Cathedral of Brasília has features that are unparalleled by any other major church of the world. “Because of its modern, futuristic framework, it inspires new perspectives on faith. The overall picture, the composing elements, give it its fresh appeal. Unlike European churches, which are closed and dark, our cathedral has a colorful stained glass roof,” the priest said.
The site is the most visited tourist attraction in Brasília, according to the local tourist board. Of the visitors that come to the capital, 27.5% choose the cathedral as their favorite stop.
