The latest Monthly Employment Survey (PME) found that Brazil's employment rate was 4.9% in September, the lowest rate recorded for the month in the time series that began in 2002.

The rate reflects a 0.5% percentage point decrease from September last year, and was also down from August this year (5%) – a variation that is not considered statistically significant.

In absolute , the unemployed population was 1.2 million people in September, remaining stable from August but 10.9% smaller than in the same period last year. On the other hand, the employed population stood at 23.1 million people, which despite the drop in the unemployment rate, shows that no new jobs were created on either a monthly or year-on-year perspective.

The Monthly Employment Survey was carried out in six metropolitan areas in Brazil, and released Thursday (Oct. 23) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
