The unemployment rate in February was 5.9%, according to Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics Agência Brasil

The unemployment rate in February was 5.9%, according to the Monthly Employment Survey (PME) released today (Mar. 26) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The figure is up from January 2015 (5.3%) and February 2014 (5.1%).

This is the highest montly rate for unemployment since June 2013, when it hit 6%, and the highest for February since the 6.4% recorded in 2011.

The number of unemployed people (considering job-seekers only) was 1.4 million in February this year, 10.2% more than in January and 14.1% more than in February last year.

The employed population was 22.8 million, 1% down from January 2015, but statistically stable compared to February 2014.
