Employment in Brazil's construction industry was down 0.83% in February compared to January. A total 23,900 jobs have been closed.

According to a survey conducted by the Union of Construction Workers of São Paulo State (SindusCon-SP) in collaboration with Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), 467,700 workers were dismissed in 12 months. The survey is based on information from the Ministry of Labor and Employment.

SindusCon chairman José Romeu Ferraz Neto said he does not expect a recovery in employment in the coming months. “The industry is still downsizing for the seventeenth consecutive month. Even if the political crisis is overcome by legal means anytime soon as we'd like it to, we're only going to see further investment resulting in new construction projects further ahead into the year, and only then can employment levels pick up again,” he said.
