New mobile numbering plan to be rolled out to five states

The new numbering standard is designed to expand the numbering capacity of mobile telephone services
A new phase in Brazil's mobile telephone numbering plan change is underway. The new nine-digit standard already in use in some Brazilian states, including Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, will be rolled out to five other states. As of November 2, all mobile numbers from Amapá, Amazonas, Maranhão, Pará, and Roraima will feature an extra 9 to the left.
However, the full transition in these areas will only take place as of November 11, when callers using the old format will start to hear a message notifying them about the change and instructing them to try again by dialing a 9XXXX-XXXX version of the same number. Until this date, calls to eight-digit numbers will still get through.
The new numbering standard is designed to expand the numbering capacity of mobile telephone services, and is already in operation in the states of Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. In the year, it will be implemented in Minas Gerais, Bahia, Sergipe, Alagoas, Pernambuco, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, and Piauí. In other Brazilian states, the transition will only be made in 2016.
