Solidarity Party launches petition for Rousseff's impeachment
The Solidarity party has started a campaign to gather signatures calling for the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff. At a news conference on Thursday (Mar. 12), the party chairman, Paulo Pereira da Silva (known in the country as Paulinho da Força Sindical), said the signatures will be collected via the party website.
Once they meet the one million signature goal required for a citizens' initiative to be submitted to Congress, the party will file the impeachment process with the Chamber of Deputies. The party will base its request on legal opinions commissioned from 12 renowned jurists, only one of which has been delivered so far.
Asked if there is any material fact that could give cause for impeachment, Silva said: “The situation is serious, corruption is widespread, billions were stolen from Petrobras. [...] And she didn't take any action. She was neglectful.”. In his opinion, failure to take action is sufficient ground for impeachment.
Silva said the party will intensify its campaign efforts on Sunday (15), when massive anti-government protests are set to take place.
On the party website, the chairman rebutted the government's view of the impeachment as a “coup” in an attempt to force a third round of vote after the election is over. “Impeachment is a constitutional provision, so much so that Brazil used it with former President Fernando Collor,” he said.
