Doctors interested in ing the Mais Médicos (“More Doctors”) program can apply for 3,174 vacancies as of Monday (May 5), the Brazilian Ministry of Health reported Friday (2).

The initiative aims to strengthen primary care by bringing doctors to priority regions that are remote, difficult to access, and highly vulnerable, where there is a shortage of these professionals.

Participating agents are part of the Family Health teams and offer care and follow-up services directly to people.

The ministry’s goal is to reach 28 thousand professionals by the end of 2025.

The program

The Mais Médicos program guarantees care to over 63 million Brazilians throughout the country. As it stands today, 24,900 doctors are active through the initiative across 4,200 cities, covering 77 percent of the national territory.

Of these municipalities, 1,700 have high levels of social vulnerability. Of the total number of doctors working under the federal program, 601 work in special indigenous districts.
