Country posts 86.5 thousand job cuts in August

Holded construction: fewer jobs in August
Figures from the General of the Employed and Unemployed (Caged, in the original Portuguese acronym), released Friday (Sep. 25) by the Ministry of Labor and Employment, show that the number of formal jobs in the country fell for the fifth month straight. In August, 86,543 jobs were cut, down 0.21% from the previous survey.
Maria das Graças Parente, Deputy Coordinator at the ministry, mentioned, however, a slowdown in the downward trend compared with July, when 157 thousand jobs were lost. Year-to-date, the reduction amounts to 572,792, or -1.39%, whereas the figure for the 12-month period stands at 985,669, -2.37%. As for the historic series initiated in 1992, this was the worst performance for an August since 1995.
Only two of the eight economic sectors surveyed ed a surge in employment: services and public istration, after four consecutive months on the wane—which reveals a change from previous months, Parente pointed out.
The sharpest reduction in the number of jobs was observed in the manufacturing industry—47,944.
