The Ministry of Health ed 45,792 doctors for the Mais Médicos (“More Doctors”) Program, marking the highest number of applicants since its creation in 2013.

Of the total applicants, 93 percent are Brazilian (42,383 professionals), including 25,594 with medical registration in Brazil and 16,789 who graduated abroad. An additional 3,309 are foreign doctors qualified to practice in the country.

Women represent the majority of applicants, with 26,864 candidates, or approximately 58 percent.

The registration period closed on May 8.

The Mais Médicos program aims to strengthen primary health care within Brazil’s public healthcare network, the SUS, by deploying doctors to priority areas—remote, hard-to-reach, and highly vulnerable regions—where there is a shortage or absence of medical professionals.

Vacancies

The public notice offers 3,064 vacancies, distributed across 1,620 municipalities and 108 positions in 26 Special Indigenous Health Districts (Dseis).

According to the notice schedule, activities for doctors ed in Brazil—as well as Brazilians and foreigners who have already completed the reception and evaluation stages—are set to begin between July 2 and 10, when exchange doctors undergo an assessment before ing Mais Médicos.

Mais Médicos

Mais Médicos professionals work within Family Health teams, delivering care and continuous follow-up directly to the communities they serve.

When necessary, patients are referred to specialists. The SUS Electronic Medical Record stores this information, ensuring the integration of patient data across primary and specialized care, including consultations and diagnostic tests.

Following the program’s resumption and expansion in 2023, the Ministry of Health aims to deploy 28,000 professionals across 4,547 municipalities by the end of 2025.

Currently, the program has approximately 24,900 doctors working in 4,200 municipalities, covering 77 percent of the national territory. Of these, 1,700 are areas with high social vulnerability.
