Lula to attend Colombian meeting on Amazon

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is scheduled to visit Leticia, Colombia, on Saturday (Jul. 8), to participate in a technical-scientific meeting on the Amazon. The event is organized by the Colombian government, chaired by Gustavo Petro.
Leticia is situated on the border with Tabatinga, in the far western region of the Amazonas state, at the triple border of Colombia, Brazil, and Peru.
The purpose of this meeting, according to the Planalto presidential palace, is to prepare for the summit of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) eight-member countries. The summit is set to take place in Belém, Pará state, on August 8, and will be attended by the presidents of Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. The meeting will result in a document to be presented at the United Nations General Assembly in September, in New York, USA.
Established in July 1978, the ACTO treaty represents a collective commitment among member countries to preserve the environment and promote the sustainable use of the Amazon's natural resources. In addition to environmental preservation, the treaty aims to foster the development of Amazon territories through t actions that generate equitable and mutually beneficial outcomes for the sustainable development of the eight nations.
