The Brazilian economy posted 657,761 formal job cuts this year, after the 95,602 jobs shed in September were added to the total. According to the General of the Employed and Unemployed (Caged in the original acronym), released today (Oct. 23) by the Ministry of Labor and Employment, it is the worst result for the month since 1992.

The Caged records the number of people working under formal contract who have been hired and laid off around the country. According to Caged, for the last 12 months until September, the country cut 1,238,628 jobs.

The economic sector that dismissed the most people in September was services, cutting 33,535 jobs, followed by civil construction, -28,221. In third place, trade shed 17,253 jobs.

In the 12-month period, the manufacturing industry leads the ranking of layoffs, shedding 515,516 jobs, followed by civil construction, -426,746, and services, -150,012.

By region, the ranking of formal jobs reduction was led by the Southeast in September, cutting 88,204 jobs, followed by the South, -21,088, the Central-West, -8958, and the North, -3,470. Only the Northeast ed an increase in employment, creating 26,118 jobs last month.

In the 12-month period, all regions have laid off more employees than hired. The Southeast leads the job cuts, reducing 725,081 jobs, followed by the Northeast, -186,994, and the South, -173,789.
